Thursday and some tea …

April 7, 2016

teacupMy first cup of tea at dawn is white,

Its name escapes me; White seems enough

I expect it relates to its Chinese name

That in translation doesn’t amount to much.

To evoke a pleasant reminder.

When the taste that simulates and sparkles

Fades

I pour another cup to conjure creative juices

It doesn’t

I will try again tomorrow.

Wednesdays words …

April 6, 2016

I will tell you a secret; I wish to write more creatively (there I said it). It was my intention when I began this blog; but it didn’t happen. I fell into a rhythm of prompts, facts and easiness.  I was afraid to experiment, introducing my art seemed a good way to placate the suggestion that I might venture into the unknown. All,  was nearly successful but always at the back of my mind there was something lacking.

As I write this I feel the tension rising; even panic … these feeling are not unknown and left unchecked will become full blown and unrelenting.  However, I will not erase this. I wish to become an artist with words … and this  my first step. So tomorrow …

Urban Landscape

April 5, 2016

landscapeAlthough I have now been to Rio a few times, I still spend too much time taking photographs than actually enjoying the ‘landscape’.

Also, being a tourist wandering with a camera is not always the best pose in a busy city.

In some respects I am looking forward to my next visit and relaxing on the ‘posing’ and enjoying the scenery …

I do have significant photograph album that I can draw on and this one, while not the best; evokes fond memories …  and leads to rather more interesting scenes.

Happy Monday

April 4, 2016

mondayI have been posting to my blog daily for almost 5 years. Not a day goes by without me making plans, researching, taking photographs, scanning etc.

It all started with an experiment with a name plucked out of the air; a persona not so far from my own, enough that I could distance myself when the need arose or near enough to embrace and celebrate when the ‘likes’ went up!

It is strange in some circles I am called ‘nela’ and I respond as if she is a good friend.

So when it is time to renew my membership, and there is a cost that will increase as my storage needs increase, I go into a panic as I might ifI was ending a relationship. Nela has become my ward or dependent on one hand and on the other my champion. So today I celebrate nelabligh she who needs no capitalisation but just 3 cheers!

There they were gone …

April 2, 2016

gardenWhen we moved into this Victorian terraced house 30 years ago it was among many 100s even 1000s of houses in the area bought by young people who wanted to climb onto the ladder of home ownership.  Scraping together enough for a deposit, then struggling to make the repayments and ‘do it up’ at the weekends.  So for two or three years they replaced, doors, windows, kitchens that had been lovingly placed in the 70s when we were so keen to remove Victorian fixtures and fittings.

Although, this was not quite gentrification as we are experiencing now it was looking this way but it was short lived; those who could avoid to move to the leafy suburbs went a couple of miles out of town. A few like us remained having made  significant modifications like a new roof and added a garden shed and then settled with our avocado bathroom suite. A 1970s phenomenon we prefered not to replace.

Now young people are no longer able to consider a mortgage, so the houses were bought by landlords and these little homes were renovated again, this time to be places of multiple occupation; perfect student accommodation.

Meanwhile, residents have enjoyed making their backyards desirable too, but sadly as more and more houses became ‘rented’ so the gardens were neglected; ivy ran rampant and sycamore trees grew to great heights some taller than the houses ; cutting out light and of course spreading more and more seedlings.

My garden is a joy and my relationship with the trees was love/hate, While they were not in my garden they did provide a barrier between us and the neighbours, they did attract some birds and squirrels but they covered the sun and were like gigantic umbrellas. So I had to plant accordingly; looking for shade loving plants and those prepared for drought like conditions.

Then something happened quite by surprise; the trees were removed. Almost all of the trees of various sizes have be chopped  as if by magic from all the houses that back onto our back yard. I cannot imagine how this occurred it must have taken enormous planning and timing.  One day they were there and the next they were gone.

Like I said I didn’t object totally to the monsters; so at first I was sad then I sensed the light and quiet … I had not realised how noisy they were.  The light was beautiful but I was concerned about the birds they were constant visitors but would roost in the shelter of the great limbs.

In my garden I have native hedging plants and some small trees so I am hoping they will perhaps make use of these in the absence of our old friends.

So far it would seem that more birds are coming to the garden that is so light and airy.

Nice book … but not so helpful

April 1, 2016

screenprintbookI have attended many workshops over the last two or three years.  I prefer learning new printing skills but I have had a go at other creative classes.  Due to miserable experiences at school I don’t always enjoy being in a classroom; although teachers now are much kinder and prepared for those of us who are keen to learn don’t always ‘pick it up’ as quickly as we might.

So to this end I like to prepare myself as much as possible before the class; so that I am not always a beginner and at the bottom of the class; and this has worked and I am enjoying learning again.

However, there is one skill I haven’t picked up fully; that is Screen Printing.  I have attended a couple of workshops and going to try again in  few weeks. After the first class I bought a couple of screens, the ink and some squeegees in a hope that I could practice at home. I looked at some YouTube videos but these did nothing but confuse me., I attended another class but while I was able to work under supervision at home again I was at a loss.

So now I have another class booked; I decided  to look for a book for beginners, but I only found very beautiful books that were still technically beyond a beginner at home with her kitchen table and sink.

So when I found this little book written in 1961 I thought it would be fine … only to be disappointed. It is a pretty little book but the language and terminology is sadly very ‘last century’

Thursday’s good news

March 31, 2016

After a few days break; I come back to the fold.  First celebrating a recent art exhibition and a sale! I sold a little wood engraving; always a great joy.  Meanwhile, some mixed results while practicing viscosity printing so while most will not be found on the wall, one was torn up and used with a poem …

Then I am also beginning to count down the months to my annual visit to Brazil.
