Make do or Mend?

March 21, 2026

As a child boots, shoes like clothes in general were never considered a fashion item. Season and suitability was the deciding factor. Wellington boots and lace up boots and shoes for winter and buckle sandals and sand shoes AKA pumps or plimsolls in summer. As the seasons came and went so, my mother packed and unpacked the clothes. She repaired, altered, darned, hemmed the clothes accordingly as we grew. Hand me down was the trend until we left home and could afford to consider the fashion of the day. For me office wear was required, for weekends I liked rock and roll and later punk. So, with a mini skirt or skinny jeans, boots became the norm. While the mini skirt has long gone, boots remain the staple in my wardrobe. Especially useful as I was a library assistant for the last 25 years of my working life. I have continued to wear boots but sadly after 25 years mine are showing wear. While the soles are replaceable they are expensive it is still cheaper than a new pair. The uppers are not so easily repaired so I might have to resort to a cycle puncture kit … my mother I think would approve … to tide me over until I need them no longer!
